" I don't think I've ever met a Liberal whom I didn't like on a personal basis. That said, if your goal is to change minds and influence people, it's probably not a good idea to begin by asserting that virtually all elected Democrats are liars. But what the hell."

Our Position on Obama's Election
The person you call President Obama ... ."

Monday, November 28, 2005

A good boy who started hanging around congressmen.
Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham answered "yes, Your Honor" when asked by U.S. District Judge Larry Burns if he had accepted bribes from someone in exchange for his performance of official duties.

Later, at a news conference, he wiped away tears as he announced his resignation.

"I can't undo what I have done but I can atone," he said.

~~

"He did the worst thing an elected official can do _ he enriched himself through his position and violated the trust of those who put him there," U.S. Attorney Carol Lam said. The statement did not identify the conspirators.

The case began when authorities started investigating whether Cunningham and his wife, Nancy, used the proceeds from the $1,675,000 sale to defense contractor Mitchell Wade to buy the $2.55 million mansion in Rancho Santa Fe. Wade put the Del Mar house back on the market and sold it after nearly a year for $975,000 _ a loss of $700,000.-  [Calif. Congressman Admits Taking Bribes]

This is a human tragedy.  Cunningham, a legitimate Vietnam hero, spent too much time around congress, and adopted the ethic.  He turned crook, and most probably will go to jail.  He loses his home, his bank account, and his freedom  Watching him, and hearing his words ... "I can't undo what I have done but I can atone," made me proud though.  There is not a democrat on earth who, under similar circumstances, would not have whined, blackmailed, threatened, and blamed somebody else .  And, God knows, so many of them ought to have had that opportunity.  My prayers go out to you and your family Duke,  Even in disgrace, you found a way to maintain honor.  ...  Time for a little memory lane ...

Ted's Happy Ending
A number of foreign citizens purchased tickets, as the law permitted, including Hong Kong businessman Eric Hotung, who recently agreed to buy Senator Edward M. Kennedy's Virginia estate for nearly $6 million, about $1 million more than the asking price.

Hotung shared coffee at the White House with Clinton last year after his wife, Patricia, a US citizen, donated nearly $100,000 to the DNC. Hotung, who has close ties to Chinese leaders, also hired a Washington law firm in 1995 to lobby on behalf of his Chinese interests. He spent $6,014 on inaugural tickets. [--Big donors dominated 'cleanest' inaugural Big donors dominated 'cleanest' inaugural --By Bob Hohler, Bostin Globe 05/05/97]
The number of Democrats caught up in illegal money laundering, bribes, and influence peddling  by Chinese communists is almost endless.  Both Ted, and Patrick Kennedy -- despite being warned by the FBI that they were being targeted by the Chinese for influence payoffs, took it anyway.  To this day I don't know how Sen. Chris Dodd avoided indictment.
When former White House chief of staff Erskine B. Bowles at the last minute balked at guaranteeing a $1.35 million mortgage for the Clintons' new house in Chappaqua, N.Y., McAuliffe rode to the president's rescue.

In a move that enables the Clintons to buy the house – and Hillary Rodham Clinton to have a base for her New York Senate run – the 42-year-old real estate developer and dealmaker pledged to put up $1.35 million in cash to secure a mortgage for the Clintons. Otherwise, swamped by more than $5 million in legal debts, the Clintons might have had difficulty obtaining the loan for the five-bedroom, century-old house.

~~

This is far from the first time McAuliffe has come to the aid of the Clintons. He headed fund-raising for the president's 1996 reelection campaign, devising the strategy that included wooing big donors with such benefits as overnight stays in the Lincoln Bedroom. [See Edward Kennedy's Wonderful Day above] .---Clinton's Home Loan Deal Raises Questions
McAuliffe was rewarded by being appointed head of the Democratic National Committee, as a Clinton surrogate.  If I was writing the Duke Cunningham Story, he would have driven a bomb laden F-4 into the Democratic National Convention last year, and  been chiseled onto Mt. Rushmore.  Now, it's too late.

"I did not vote for Obama but he is remarkable. In less than three weeks in office he has collected more than $150,000 in back taxes."
Gayle Miller
I think once these guys are in Congress more than 12 years they start adopting the ethic that got Cunningham in trouble.

No Senator or representative should be allowed to be in Congress more than 12 years.

I think so ... but the Supremes won't allow term limits, so WTFYGD?

Jake, I believe you are dead-on correct, ergo, great minds think alike. Constitutional amendments are tough to get though, especially one that unemploys a few hundred self-important leeches.

Rodger, I can't believe Cunningham was dumb enough to think that house shenanigan would not be noticed.

He had a life and career that would have been cited in books and academies as an example of virtue and accomplishment; instead he threw it all away for a fucking glitzy house with trimmings. So sad, so very, very sad.

And Kennedy and the Clintons will get theirs, maybe something like a stroke where their only connection to the world outside their bodies will be eyeblinks. Filthy ratbastards.

I heard that story about Duke and was immediately sad. I wondered WTF happened.

I am wholeheartedly in favor of term limits. Lord, look at Kennedy and Byrd. Need anyone say more? But like so many things that make so much sense(vouchers, flat rate or consumption tax system, partial private SS accounts, dynamiting the Dept/ED and NPR and NYT and...) we'll never see them. It's a Catch 22, the very things that these scum use to throw an ever wider net of influence over more people and increase their power, are the things that desperately need changing. By allowing term limits, they are ceding power back to us, and nothing short of all of us showing up at the Capital, fully armed, is going change the current setup.
