Vatican Instructions
At the height of the media horror over revelations of sexual abuse by some Roman Catholic priests, I had two comments at odds with the then current wisdom:
  1. Pedophilia bad.  But something else was driving this story, that had nothing to do with moral outrage.  One hint was that many of  the same hedonists who spent eight years tap dancing around Herr Clinton's sexual depravities (as well as those of others in the entertainment industry),  seemed to lead the charge, making all the cleverest jokes about it.
  2. I argued that homosexual leaning priests, who remained celibate, were no different than heterosexual priests who remained celibate, as church canon decrees.
With Pope Benedict XVI about to issue a Vatican "instruction" forbidding even celibate homosexuals from entering seminary' I'm puzzled, like this guy:
"No one believed they would do it, but it looks like they're going to," said the Rev. Thomas Reese, former editor of the Jesuit magazine America and now a visiting scholar at Santa Clara University. "This policy seems to be saying celibacy is not possible for gay men, therefore we cannot ordain them."
What's different about the document, according a Sept. 19 Catholic World News (CWN) article, is the proviso forbidding even celibate homosexuals. It is unclear what will happen to homosexual men currently in seminary.
It's now apparent, to me anyway, that the media fainting spells about pedophile priests were part of the left's declared war against Christianity in general, and the Catholic church in particular.  Pope Benedict elect  received the left's Newt Gingrich reception, complete with argumentum ad hominem, and false stories portraying him as a willing Nazi.  Benedict's assumptions about the nature of pedophile priests will fuel a new round of political activism by the religious left, but here's something  I did not know.
"In 1961, Pope John XXIII issued a binding directive to canon law that ruled that ordination "should be barred to those who are afflicted with evil tendencies to homosexuality or pederasty, since for them the common life and the priestly ministry would constitute serious dangers."
As long as Pope Benedict  is going to take all the heat for this, maybe I can talk him into issuing a Vatican "instruction"  to dust off some of the Inquisition's more interesting mechanical devices, and put them to use on some people whose identities I will provide. A Christian fatwa, so to speak (*sound of that shrill Muslim woman tongue yodel*). .

"I did not vote for Obama but he is remarkable. In less than three weeks in office he has collected more than $150,000 in back taxes."

I was wondering about this too, and here's what I came up with:

Right now most seminarians are screened six ways to Sunday. They have all kinds of psychological screenings and can be denied entry for any number of things that are not inherently sinful but are inappropriate for priests. Heck, they can't even be carrying debt.

Adding same sex attraction to the list of mental disorders that are not appropriate for priests is not all that radical.

Given that the Church cannot retreat from its position on homosexuality, and that the proclivity of male homosexuals toward sexual predation on the young has proved to be so much of a danger, the Holy Father is doing all he can do.

This is a matter of Church "personnel policies," anyway. Or don't you believe in a free market in labor?

I'm not Catholic, but I don't think that the problem is that homosexuals inherintly aren't capable of celibacy (most people aren't), but that the nature of the Catholic priesthood is going to attract homosexuals and other deviants, who believe that becomming a priest and therefore celibate will give them an easy out to a problem that just isn't that easy. It's easier than overcoming the problem and entering into normal relaitonships, and more socially acceptable than remaining celibate but not a priest.
