Suicidal glory is the luxury of the irresponsible.
We're not giving up. We're waiting for a better opportunity to win.

" I don't think I've ever met a Liberal whom I didn't like on a personal basis. That said, if your goal is to change minds and influence people, it's probably not a good idea to begin by asserting that virtually all elected Democrats are liars. But what the hell."

Our Position on Obama's Election

Today's Thinking Point

"President Bush finally roused himself yesterday from his vacation in Crawford, Tex., [and] .... hurried to put as much distance as possible between himself and America's initial measly aid offer of $15 million, and he took issue with an earlier statement by the United Nations' emergency relief coordinator, Jan Egeland, who had called the overall aid efforts by rich Western nations "stingy." [Are We Stingy? Yes - New York Times]

I hadn't gave much thought about all this silliness about how much of my tax "contribution" was being handed over to tsunami relief ... until I saw that NYT editorial.  I operate pretty much on the assumption that anything the New York Times is for, is way freaking bad. So, now that I am thinking about it, I'm asking,  WTF  did the Feds give even a penny to this, or any other relief effort

President Bush was exactly right when he said  "Americans are a generous people." We are, and I almost certainly would  volunteer $20 or so to tsunami   ...  if I was asked ... but I wasn't.  It's a habit we've gotten ourselves into. A bad habit.   If you're my neighbor, or anyone really, who can explain to me why your invalid grammy needs breast implants, or a new heart, I almost certainly will pony up.  What I don't like is when I don't know you, and as I'm getting off the subway you stick a .45 in my face and take the money.  Charity does not fall under the aegis of national defense, or any other constitutionally mandated gummint action.

So, New York Times, you have your own big newspaper, and your own cable channel, and de facto ownership of ABC, CBS, PBS, NBC, and NPR ..  so why don't you hold a Begathon for Tsunami Relief, and the several dozen other deals what will pop up in the coming year?  That way, if we want to give, we can, and it's incentive for the world's citizenry to begin treating us with civility, either because they have benefited from our largess, or know they'll be needing it in the future, and it's not a good idea to poke a stick in the eye of your benefactor.   Like our gummint does every day.   That's what I think.

"I did not vote for Obama but he is remarkable. In less than three weeks in office he has collected more than $150,000 in back taxes."
