    A true liberal, Stein was responsible for inventing the image of Sen. Bill Scott (VA R) as being the "dumbest man in the Senate" because he didn't like his politics. Stein's (his wife joins him in epiphany) journal documenting arrival into the land of common sense is interspersed with humor (11 ways to tell if you've joined the VRWC)  and wonderful vignettes about life in New York's Upper West Side bastion of liberal thought (Oh no, don't tell us you're against abortion now). At a dinner party Stein defends Dan Quayle who is being bashed for his "Murphy Brown" speech:

Stein: "... would it really be such a terrible thing if [unwed) parents thought a little harder in advance about consequences?"

Dinner partner: [red now, literally sputtering] "... Jesus Christ! When did you become a fascist?"

    It's unfair to reduce Stein's book down to a single point, just so I can answer my opening poser, but I will.  Liberals are not unwilling to accept new ideas that might alter their thinking; they simply refuse to read or listen to anything or anybody that might plunge them into those roiling waters. Now that, I accept.
