SPEED
A few weeks ago I mentioned in a semi-joking way that my machine took 30 minutes to boot up raked over the coals for running such an un-optimized rig. Fair enough, so I decided to do something about it. -- [Alice Hill’s Real Tech News - Independent Tech » Must Read: 122 Ways to Speed Up Windows XP]
Here are the steps I took

  • #4 Disable file indexing. This made sense, so I did it.  Google Desktop manages to have a system that does the exact same thing (only better) without taking to much of the system to do it. But be prepared, each file is unindexed so it can take a  little while, and the process pretty much uses all your computer's resources.
  • #6. Empty the Windows Prefetch folder -- I did, but later some other guy said don't.  Windows will only replace them, so I won't do it again.
  •  #8 ensure that DMA is enabled -- Mine was
  • #11 Remove any unnecessary programs and/or items from Windows Startup routine
  • 13.) Turn off any and all unnecessary animations, and disable active desktop. --I frankly didn't know what all this meant, but I did it. It's immediate effect is to give Windows XP the look and feel of Windows 2000.  I  sort of like it.

That's all I did in one shot, because I wanted to see how it worked, and if something goes wrong not have to undo everything just to find the stinker.  I went to bed.  This morning's boot up took about 6 seconds.  Okay, it actually took about a minute, which is a hell of a lot faster than it was taking. Yayyyyyyyyyy.

you forgot #1: buy a mac

My Mac, with the Tiger OS, is so much faster than Panther, which was also a big jump, it's amazing.

It boots up, really, in 10 seconds. When I have to use a PC, it's torture.

Well yeah, my windows machine would boot up fast too, if I ran as few programs on it as Mac's can run. But I don't, and it doesn't, and there we are.

Yay for Mr. Bowen!!! USA USA

I've never even felt close to restricted by using a Mac. I say stick with your PC if you're happy. I've tried PCs and they blow, of course I'll be the first to admit, I'm not an expert.
