Suicidal glory is the luxury of the irresponsible.
We're not giving up. We're waiting for a better opportunity to win.

" I don't think I've ever met a Liberal whom I didn't like on a personal basis. That said, if your goal is to change minds and influence people, it's probably not a good idea to begin by asserting that virtually all elected Democrats are liars. But what the hell."

My oldest and dearest friend called me from Alaska a few days ago with news.  His son, who has developed into something of  a modern day Jack Armstrong -- savvy hunter, exceptional athlete (hockey and baseball),  smart, good looking, and  the kid you want your daughter to bring home, announced, after Thanksgiving dinner, that he would drop out of college following the semester just ending, and join the United States Marines.

Jack said he cried.

"I don't think I've ever seen that before, dad?"

He hadn't. Jack, son of a Marine Colonel, was a highly decorated Huey pilot in Nam.  He too dropped out of college , and found himself drafted.  He wasn't looking to go into the Army ...  at all, but he went,  and  did both himself, and his country proud.
"You know Rodge, I just admire, and love the shit out of all those kids who are fighting today, but they've always been someone else's kid."
It's what every parent feels.  The fear that they may lose the most precious thing in their lives.  My parents felt it when they took me to the airport, although I was quite cavalier, and dismissive of their feelings.  Jack's parents too, felt that way, and so have/would you.  I read the telegram my mom got from the War Department one January night .  I felt it.
"I'm scared, Rodge, but I'm so goddamn proud of him I could split."
Me too. And I'm happy that we have so many like him. What a country!

"I did not vote for Obama but he is remarkable. In less than three weeks in office he has collected more than $150,000 in back taxes."

Ditto! When our son signed w/the USMC, in 1997 I lost many a night's sleep. What he said that made sense to myself and husband, was, "Mom, I could die in a car crash, get hit by a drunk driver, catch a bullet in a drive-by shooting. At least as a Marine, I would die w/respect and honor." 'nuf said. momma slept. joyce

Roger,

The story of your friend's son really got to me. Thank him for all of us who benefit from his son's noble purpose.

Congrats to your friend and his son, but, don't you think it was inevitable? Coming from a relatively long military line the son would not settle for "same old, same old". God Bless Them.
