Suicidal glory is the luxury of the irresponsible.
We're not giving up. We're waiting for a better opportunity to win.

" I don't think I've ever met a Liberal whom I didn't like on a personal basis. That said, if your goal is to change minds and influence people, it's probably not a good idea to begin by asserting that virtually all elected Democrats are liars. But what the hell."

Twelve Great Years!
C-SPAN MARKS 25 YEARS OF CALL-IN PROGRAMMING
C-SPAN is a national treasure. I cannot offer more praise than that. As far as viewer call-ins, I am substantially reprinting my post on the subject from May, 2003.

May 05, 2003

On C-Span

"Even Lamb's co-workers find it funny that he still can get worked up over a couple of callers" ... without the ratings gauge, Lamb judges C-SPAN's success "by how many phone calls they take per hour" - C-SPAN remains a reliable source thanks to founder's fair approach, by Aaron Barnhart, Kansas City Star.
Don't get me wrong, I think Brian Lamb has given us a valuable resource in C-Span, and I once joined thousands of others who wrote to tell him so. Still....

I no longer keep C-Span as my "Home Channel," the way I used to. It used to be C-Span's practice to have just two phone numbers, and callers were put on the air first come, first served. The tone and tenor of the callers was a reliable bellwether of public opinion on a given issue. That changed early in the Clinton administration. I remember that a Seattle based union had an organized a boiler room effort to combat the beating Hillary's'health care' initiative was taking. Despite using high speed dialers, etc., the union was unable to get through enough to dominate the response. What do Democrats do when they are thwarted by rules? All together: They complain that the Right Wing is unfairly dominating the debate, and must be stopped. Shortly after, Lamb went to three lines - Republican, Democrat, and Independent - with predictable results.

Brian Lamb: "Go ahead caller on the Republican line."

Caller: " I just want your guest to know that I used to be a conservative Republican, but I'm so ashamed of the viscous lies being told about President Clinton that I will never ..."

C-Span has ceased to be an accurate measure of public opinion. A pool of 50 Democrat callers can theoretically balance the viewpoint of 10 million Republicans under the new system (and vice versa). I was disappointed in that cave-in, for whatever reason it was made, and drifted away. But, by Gar, by then we had the Internet, and radio call-ins galore. The Lord provides.

Comments:

"I did not vote for Obama but he is remarkable. In less than three weeks in office he has collected more than $150,000 in back taxes."
Gayle Miller
Amen!

Sadly, CSPAN has flashed and drifted off into the nether. Brian Lamb has stayed too long.

I agree Casca, but C-Span's bread and butter, the live camera, wall-to-wall coverage of events - without commentary - is the greatest thing to ever happen in the American media (IMHO) I think you'd agree with that too. Plus, Susan Swain gives me tingles.

Brian Lamb ranks up there with George Washington in bringing freedom to America. I first learned that the media feeds us lies and distortions by watching CSPAN.
