Der Historikerstreit

After living through eight years of what FBI Director Louis Freeh characterizes in his book [My FBI : Bringing Down the Mafia, Investigating Bill Clinton, and Fighting the War on Terror] as Clinton "scandals, and the rumored scandals, the incubating ones and the dying ones [that] never ended," democrats were exhausted as 2001 began. Even as a new president was taking the oath of office, Bill and Hillary were staging the tackiest leave taking in American history, with tales of pardon selling, bribe taking, furniture theft, and self centered exhibitionism overshadowing the Inauguration. But Democrats are nothing, if not resourceful. They allowed the new president about 5 minutes before beginning a Historikerstreit. In five years they have completed a guilt transference unrivaled in the annals of truth tailoring. President Bush was the drug user, the fascist, the liar, the crook, the traitor, and cries for his impeachment began on day one. The head of the DNC sadly observes the culture of corruption (in the Republican party!), and Al Gore notes that things are so out of whack that he feels like there's an "alternate universe."

With the unveiling of this portrait at DNC national headquarters, the mission is completed. Me, I'm about to fight D.C. traffic and head for Jimmy Carter International, and a flight home.
