" I don't think I've ever met a Liberal whom I didn't like on a personal basis. That said, if your goal is to change minds and influence people, it's probably not a good idea to begin by asserting that virtually all elected Democrats are liars. But what the hell."

Liars Liars
In his farewell column ["13 Things I Meant to Write About but Never Did"] New York Times Public Editor Daniel Okrent wrote :
2. Op-Ed columnist Paul Krugman has the disturbing habit of shaping, slicing and selectively citing numbers in a fashion that pleases his acolytes but leaves him open to substantive assaults. Maureen Dowd was still writing that Alberto R. Gonzales "called the Geneva Conventions 'quaint' " nearly two months after a correction in the news pages noted that Gonzales had specifically applied the term to Geneva provisions about commissary privileges, athletic uniforms and scientific instruments. Before his retirement in January, William Safire vexed me with his chronic assertion of clear links between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, based on evidence only he seemed to possess.

"No one deserves the personal vituperation that regularly comes Dowd's way, and some of Krugman's enemies are every bit as ideological (and consequently unfair) as he is. But that doesn't mean that their boss, publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., shouldn't hold his columnists to higher standards.

"I didn't give Krugman, Dowd or Safire the chance to respond before writing the last two paragraphs. I decided to impersonate an opinion columnist.

Sort of a tough year for the legion of fellow travelers (like this guy, and this guy) who make a living quoting the likes of Dan Dan the News Man, Newsweak, and Krugman, eh wot? Okrent didn't quite snap Krugman's neck (that job can only be finished by Sulzberger, who has even less integrity than Krugman) so Dr. Krugman's squeaks can still be heard (Power Line offers a nice spring board into the roil).

This all sort of ties in nicely with yesterday's self outing of Nixon nemesis "Deep Throat." (yawn). The entire Watergate affair was driven by the left's hatred of Richard Nixon for exposing Alger Hiss, a man with Krugman's political DNA. Okrent did much the same thing with Krugman. Too many leftist loony-toons worship at the altar of Krugman's formulaic fantasies to be forgiven this act of lese majesty. No more Manhattan dinner parties for you Danny.

Oh, one last thing. Why the hell don't Dowd and Krugman deserve "personal vituperation?" They're unrepentant liars, ain't they? And, why do liberals like Okrent, even while trying to be decent people, insist on mitigating bad behavior by leftists with 'but they do it too, only worse'? Sheesh.

"I did not vote for Obama but he is remarkable. In less than three weeks in office he has collected more than $150,000 in back taxes."
Gayle Miller
"Oh, one last thing. Why the hell don't Dowd and Krugman deserve "personal vituperation?" They're unrepentant liars, ain't they?"

Keep in mind: the real cultural battle going on is between the Fantasist dupes (and their cynical leaders in politics, academia and the media) and the Empiricists, who have virtually no political leadership and damn all in the media.

And that's exactly the reason Dowd and Krugman do not "deserve" vituperation... from the Fantasist perspective. From the Fantasist perspective, no lie is bad if it supports the Fantasist world view and/or agenda.

Spoken like a true curmudgeon David .. although I'm kind of lost, it sure sounds like what I myself would say if I could.

But, but, Hiss was never convicted of anything, so that means he was really innocent, like OJ.
